Teens do independent research in UNT laboratories for summer jobs

DENTON (UNT), Texas — For many teens, their first summer job means taking food orders or bussing the tables in a restaurant, sacking groceries, babysitting or working as a camp counselor or lifeguard.
Mira Patel's job, however, is in the University of North Texas biology lab of Pamela Padilla, identifying a molecular mechanism involved with how diet and genotype influence stress responses. The research will provide more information about the consequences of gestational diabetes.

UNT demonstrates first ever drone provided cell service for disaster response

DENTON, Texas (UNT) — When disasters like tornadoes and hurricanes strike, they often take down the technology emergency workers desperately need to keep in contact — cellphone service. Now a professor at the University of North Texas is working to make sure those first responders can get that vital access through an airborne communication system.

UNT on the Square exhibition features photographs of family living in unique East Texas community

What: The Upshaws of County Line, an exhibition of photographs taken by Richard Orton of a family that lived in an East Texas community that was formed in the 1870s as a safe place for newly freed slaves during Reconstruction and Jim Crow Texas.
When: July 7 (Friday) – Aug. 12 (Saturday). A reception, which will include an artist’s talk, will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 4 (Friday).

Texas ranch helping trauma survivors gets needed help from UNT class

DENTON (UNT), Texas — A North Texas ranch that helps people and animals when other therapies fail is getting help itself from a group of University of North Texas marketing students.
Founder Bob Williams started Ranch Hand Rescue Counseling Center and Animal Sanctuary nine years ago as a combined rescue facility for animals and therapy center for trauma survivors who don’t respond well to traditional counseling. The organization’s mission is strong, but the group struggles in other ways.

UNT TAMS student wins Goldwater Scholarship, another takes honorable mention

DENTON, Texas (UNT) — Amber Lu, a student from the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science at the University of North Texas has been named a 2017 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Winner.
“It’s a really humbling experience,” said Lu. “It could have easily been any of the other nominees. Being surrounded by these peers is amazing, they are all doing such amazing research and they just make me want to do better.”
